Writer’s Block

More than 8 months since I last wrote something here in this blog.

Let’s just call it writer’s block – the moment when you just couldn’t bring yourself to write anything coherent and construct paragraphs that make the least bit of sense.

I have the writer’s block. I’m a bit rusty, but I will start writing again.

Ketchh: A Filipino Social Network!

November 22, 2011 1 comment

We all know how influential the Philippines is when it comes to dictating the success of websites all over the world, particularly the rise and fall of social networking sites.

Let’s face it, Pinoys rule Facebook and Twitter just like they used to rule Friendster and MySpace.

Here comes A social network designed and created by a really close friend of mine. I promote it not just because of the friendship and bond that we share but also because of the vision that he has for this site.

He wanted to start a social network for Filipinos (with the possibility of eventual expansion, of course). He wanted to create a social networking site defined by who and what we are and not by the ideals and strategies of western tech-capitalists.

I know that this is a dream come true for him and his partners. As for myself, I always wondered what it would be like to have been close friends with Mark Zuckerberg; I guess this is as close as it can get – or maybe even better.

They will officially launch the site within a week or so. I just couldn’t hide my excitement after getting a text and e-mail from my friend, 6 months after he told me that he was going to start making his own social network, that I’m being invited to try the site out before the official launch.

Ketchh – A social networking site for Pinoys, by Pinoys. I can’t wait for its official launch. 🙂

Try it out and see for yourself. 🙂

5 TV shows from my childhood

October 24, 2011 Leave a comment

I discovered a new channel called “Cbeebies” – the kiddie cartoon channel of BBC. I caught an episode of Teletubbies and I suddenly remembered the 5 shows that I watched when I was a kid.

I won’t mention the Anime shows like Ghost Fighter, Dragon Ball, Slam Dunk, Knockout and Flame of Recca.

Also exempted from this list are shows like the Power Rangers, Masked Rider Black and Ultraman, as well as all most old Nickelodeon Cartoons anymore because those shows WERE (and still are) THE BEST!!!!!

1. Teletubbies – I don’t know why I watched this show. I knew I hated it.

2. Barney and Friends. (Back then, “BJ”, to me was but a yellow dinosaur’s name. [watch until end of the clip below to see what I am talking about… HAHAHA!])

I didn’t know that Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato had roles in Barney’s.

3. Blues Clues – mixed feelings about this show. I found a blue dog weird, but not a purple dinosaur. Maybe because I had a pet dog and he wasn’t blue and I had no dinosaur.

4.  Psalty – I forgot which channel they put this on (IBC 13 ata) but I remember listening well and getting into a little religious mood because of this show.

5. Bananas in Pajamas – Classic. It’s funny how you can derive a whole lot of new meanings when you watch them at this age.

Purple Dinosaurs, Talking Bananas, Colorful Aliens, A blue song book and a blue dog. What weird shows we had back then.

In hindsight, I watched Psalty and Barney because I had crushes on the girls on the show. Hahahaha!

For a person like me who is used to having and acquiring a lot of things, this is hard to swallow. However, I do get his point and am rather inclined to try “Editing” my life as well. 🙂

Before there was Justin Bieber…

October 10, 2011 Leave a comment

I can’t believe Justin Bieber’s name will find its way into one of my entries but I write just so that we wont forget that before 635 Million (WTF?!) people viewed Justin’s video on youtube, there were two boys with almost the same hairdo who made girls all over the world salivate and swoon all over much to the envy of other boys in the world.

There was Jesse McCartney…

and of Course… Aaron Carter!

Now Spot the Difference. HAHAHA!

In hotter news, grabe lang talaga si Emma Watson.

Good Vibes # 1: Feel Good Quotes

September 28, 2011 Leave a comment

We’re being surrounded by negativity.  We are perpetually being bombarded by bad news from every form of media imaginable. It’s like having 10 bad news for every 1 good news that we have and it’s tiring. To add insult to injury, these are worsened by some social media posts by selfish people who only cared about their own petty grievances. (I, for one, am particularly incensed at the insensitivity of certain people (some of whom I personally knew) for having their priorities all messed up as they went on to rant about cancelled basketball games, lost signal, brag about their generators and other comforts while the majority of the population were battling floods, waves, fallen trees just to come out of the storm alive… But I’ll leave that for another entry.)

While it is “reality” and I acknowledge that something must be done about these problems that we all carry on our shoulders, I wouldn’t mind having some sort of relief every now and then by trying to see the good and beautiful from the simple things that we often overlook – things that most, if not all, of us would be able to relate to. (Just to make the problem solving a lighter and more manageable).

So yesterday in the middle of the blackout, I made a decision to take note and record things that make my day, be it a person, an animal, a song, a radio jingle or in this case – a quotable quote. Basically list down things that brings a smile to our face and lightens the mood when the goings get tough.

Enough of the bad news and let’s bring in the good vibes. 🙂

Good Vibes # 1: Feel Good Quotes (There’s a quote out there for everyone. We just have to find them at the right time.)

Quote of the day: “How to Love a Woman”

“You may not be her first, her last, or her only. She loved before she may love again. But if she loves you now, what else matters? She’s not perfect – you aren’t either, and the two of you may never be perfect together but if she can make you laugh, cause you to think twice, and admit to being human and making mistakes, hold onto her and give her the most you can. She may not be thinking about you every second of the day, but she will give you a part of her that she knows you can break – her heart. So don’t hurt her, don’t change her, don’t analyze and don’t expect more than she can give. Smile when she makes you happy, let her know when she makes you mad, and miss her when she’s not there.”

– Bob Marley

Coming from Bob Marley, there’s a high chance that this song might also be about “Weed”, but in this case, I’d like to believe that it’s more applicable to women than to cannabis. This one particularly made me feel better as I had a person in mind the whole time.

There’s nothing like a nice heartfelt quote to make you feel better.

Good vibes. 🙂

Search for Meaning

September 24, 2011 3 comments

4 years ago during my first Philosophy Class, we were asked to read Viktor Frankl’s book entitled “Man’s Search for Meaning”.

I admit, I didn’t read beyond the pages that were required because back then I only cared to read pages which would help me get a higher grade in my subject. So to hell with the book I thought to myself. I got an A and that was all I cared about – before.

So 4 years removed from sitting in that airconditioned 6pm class every T-TH, I encounter Viktor Frankl once again as I rummaged for books to read and searched for videos to watch.

In essence the video stresses the importance of believing in people, and that  “in taking man as he is we make him worse but if we take man as he should be, then we make him capable of becoming what he can be.”

This time around, I read and watched not because I had a test to answer but because I had “meaning” and “learning” to find. So here I let his quotes do the talking.

Quote # 1: “A man who becomes conscious of the responsibility he bears toward a human being who affectionately waits for him, or to an unfinished work, will never be able to throw away his life. He knows the “why” for his existence, and will be able to bear almost any “how”

Quote # 2:  “It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life—daily and hourly. Our answer must consist, not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual.”

Quote # 3: “Love is the only way to grasp another human being in the innermost core of his personality. No one can become fully aware of the very essence of another human being unless he loves him. By his love he is enabled to see the essential traits and features in the beloved person; and even more, he sees that which is potential in him, which is not yet actualized but yet ought to be actualized. Furthermore, by his love, the loving person enables the beloved person to actualize these potentialities. By making him aware of what he can be and of what he should become, he makes these potentialities come true.”

Quote # 4: “When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.”

Quote # 5: “To give light one must endure burning.”

I remember walking in the halls of the University and passing by this bulletin board upon which this quote was posted “He who has a WHY to live can live for almost any HOW. ~ Viktor Frankl”  I read that line each time I passed by that board and somehow felt better each passing moment. I hope it’s still there.
